The Ring Light Project will allow students to build their own portable ring light that attaches to their phone. They will be able to practically learn multiple design processes such as 3D Modelling, 3D Printing, Soldering, Electronics, Sewing, and Prototyping. Through the process, they will develop a basic competency in a diverse range of essential technical skills as a basis for confidently approaching further vocational training, leading to employment.
This project is designed for for beneficiaries who are have a keen interest in design and have attended prior training to acquire technical skills. The Learning Objective for this activity is for participants to comprehend and apply the problem identification and solving methodologies in real-world situations and have knowledge of emerging technologies, their current uses and possible future applications
The project will be completed over 4-5 days- dedicating approximately 10 hours to complete the process. The timeline is described below.
Considerations and Solutions
Supplement Materials: Since the beneficiaries only have basic skills and can get easily distracted or discouraged, it was important that each step in the process was clear and ample resources are provided so the students feel supported and encouraged. Tutorial videos, CAD Files, Mockups, in depth written instructions, and visual guides were provided for the students.
Universal Resources: Since the students are located in Greece, careful material choices had to be made. We chose resources that were affordable and available globally to reduce obstacles. For instance, we chose 3D Builder as the software to build the CAD Model as it is free to install, is equipped to work with the available computers, and has basic features that are easy to use.
Scope for customisation: Students can modify their CAD models to their liking. Students can add text, simple pattern such as their initials, or extruding patterns.Since they will have different phones, they will need to tailor the size of their straps to suit their device's dimensions. After testing out multiple attachment methods, this was the most adjustable and efficient.
Relevance: After doing user research and understanding the students, we needed to design a project that peeked their interest. We discovered how they have been making Tik-Tok videos. Using a ring light can aid their video making process and be an exciting endeavour.
After this evaluation, we did a lot of testing and created multiple iterations to come up with the most holistic design
Instructors are provided with Handbooks with detailed instructions of material requirements, set ups, and appropriate structure of the workflow.
,The students will follow these steps to create their own Portable Ring Lights:
Building their CAD Models:
3D Printing:
Soldering:
Diffuser Prep:
Spray Painting:
Assembly:
Sewing:
Testing
Learners are required to work in groups of 2-3 to answer the prompt:
Create a Tik-Tok transition video using the ring light as a prop. Remember to choose appropriate audio for the background and make sure you are showing the effectiveness of the ring light in a creative way.
They will then assemble together and share their videos and pictures with the class.
